Roger Bart Interview - The Producers Movie and Desperate Housewives
By: Fred Topel

Roger Bart is evidence to my theory that the greatest villains and jerks are played by the nicest actors.
I also believe vice versa, so all you Hollywood nice guys, I’m onto you. But after freaking me out for the
past year on Desperate Housewives by playing an evil version of myself, Bart has the ultimate lovable
flamboyant flame in The Producers.
Bart actually originated the role of Carmen Ghia on stage, but if you don’t live in a major city where the
company toured, you’ll just be going, "Who is that gay director’s gay assistant prancing around in lavish
dance numbers?" Since they get TV in every city, it shouldn’t take long to recognize George, the crazy
pharmacist from Desperate Housewives. Let me put my earlier comment into context. As a hopeless
romantic, I often pined for unavailable women, often settling for friendship and hoping my nice gestures
would impress them. Though I was tempted to commit poison and arson, it’s good to know that it wouldn’t
have mattered so I’m better off playing it safe.
Oh, the nice guy comment? Well, Bart made it a point to converse with me before and after our interview.
It was small talk like, "Did you like the movie? Where are you from? Christmas in New York." Nothing
major, nothing he’ll remember, but he didn’t have to do anything. Lots of people don’t. He just wanted to
be friendly. Oh, and George is really dead unfortunately. But more on that later.
