2004 EMMY AWARDS: A night in white satin

After everyone's through talking about Meryl Streep's bizarre Emmy awards
outfit, which she topped off with a long strand of green, crafts-fair beads,
the fashion chatter can turn to what actually worked last night.

Kudos to Teri Hatcher, who stars in a new, well-received series, "Desperate
Housewives." Her heavily beaded black, white and gold Elie Saab
asymmetrically draped gown with a paint splatter effect was one of
    the evening's strongest looks.
    The "O.C.'s'' Mischa Barton's '30s-style
gold beaded gown was also a winner.

Some fashion trends are now staples, like chandelier earrings. They dangled
from nearly every ear. And some classics, like white satin, are trendy again.
The big color for spring, white made an early appearance on last night's red
    carpet.

Melania Knauss, Donald Trump's fiancee, chose a stunning white satin plunging
gown with subtle embroidery. Also in white were Joely Richardson, Jennifer
Garner and Marlo Thomas, among others.

There was lots of black lace and net, lots of color, and after two seasons
in the spotlight, it may now be agreed that pink looks good on grown women.
Debra Messing glowed in a strapless hot pink sheath with ribbon rosettes,
and the biggest earrings of the evening. Surprise winner Allison Janney of
NBC's "The West Wing" made the right choice with her bright green gown,
though she seemed to be having a bad hair day. So did first-time winner
Cynthia Nixon, who appears to have turned into her character, Miranda, on
"Sex and the City.'' She looked remarkably frumpy in a one-shoulder bronze
gown and casual beads that looked as if they came from the mall.

Laura Linney looked young and dewy in a cocktail-length black Prada dress
with delicate beading and satin details on the bodice, great hair and beautiful
makeup. "Sex and the City" winner Sarah Jessica Parker looked stunning in her
strapless lace, net and feather Chanel couture gown -- and as usual bucked a
trend, wearing tiny diamond earrings instead of chandeliers.

Leave it to Sharon Stone, a winner for her guest appearance on "The Practice,"
to come out nearly nude, in a seriously slinky satin lilac gown with cutouts
all over, including one that bared her navel. It was a gown for the fearless only.
