Fall TV Preview
Which brings us to ABC, which lately has found itself reprising the underdog
role it was stuck in for most of the first 25 years of its existence. The same
spirit of daring that led ABC to give us "Batman" (1966), "Soap" (1977) and
"Moonlighting" (1985) is particularly evident this fall in
"Desperate Housewives," a stylized, seductive soap opera that initially
brings "The Stepford Wives" to mind but ultimately stands on its own
as an oddball original.
How oddball? Creator- co-executive producer Marc Cherry says he got the idea
for it while watching the Andrea Yates trial on TV with his mom. "For those of
you who don't remember," he told reporters, "it was the tragic story of a woman
who drowned her children in a bathtub." Don't worry. None of Cherry's "Wives"
is that desperate, but each has doubts of her outwardly perfect domestic life
in a color- coordinated, upscale cul-de-sac that could have been designed by
Martha Stewart.
"Our hope is that it's never going to be traditional anything," Cherry said.
A high- powered cast, including Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, adds both
grit and glitz to the mystery-suspense-soap opera.
